Where the data comes from
Each point is one ball, read from the rules of the body that runs its sport. Where a rule gives a range, the point is its middle; golf's rule sets only a largest mass and a smallest diameter, so its point is those two limits. A diameter is turned into a circumference (π × diameter), and inches and ounces into centimeters and grams. Bowling (about 68 cm around and 7,257 g) is left out because it would need a log axis. The values are calculated by Unlabeled; only the measurements are taken from the rule books, not their text.
The twelve rule books, with the limits read from each:
- Table tennis: diameter 40 mm, mass 2.7 g. ITTF rules
- Golf: diameter at least 42.67 mm, mass at most 45.93 g. R&A rules
- Cricket: circumference 22.4 to 22.9 cm, mass 155.9 to 163 g. MCC rules
- Field hockey: circumference 224 to 235 mm, mass 156 to 163 g. FIH rules
- Baseball: circumference 9 to 9.25 in, mass 5 to 5.25 oz. MLB rules
- Softball: circumference 30.2 to 30.8 cm, mass 178 to 198.4 g. WBSC rules
- Handball (size 3): circumference 58 to 60 cm, mass 425 to 475 g. IHF rules
- Volleyball: circumference 65 to 67 cm, mass 260 to 280 g. FIVB rules
- Soccer: circumference 68 to 70 cm, mass 410 to 450 g. IFAB rules
- Water polo (men's ball): circumference 0.68 to 0.71 m, mass 400 to 450 g. World Aquatics rules (the World Aquatics regulations, as Aquatics GB hosts them)
- Netball: circumference 690 to 710 mm, mass 400 to 450 g. World Netball rules
- Basketball (size 7, men): circumference 750 to 770 mm, mass 580 to 620 g. FIBA rules
